Man accused of theft, scamming homeowners faces felony charges

A man in Milford has been charged in relation to a roofing scam, according to a July 2 report. The report out of Cincinnati states that there were nine different homeowners who were stolen from during the course of the scam.

The man accused of scamming the homeowners, a 35-year-old, faces a total of eight felonies for stealing from the elderly. Six are fourth-degree felonies, and two were raised to third-degree felonies. He also faces 10 counts for theft. Those are also felony charges of the fourth- and fifth-degrees.

How did the man steal from the elderly? It all happened when he didn't make repairs or deliver materials despite charging customers under the business name "United Home Solutions." It's not clear if he'd intended to work under this name or if the business had performed any work in the past, but in this case, he's accused of violating the contracts he had with these people.

When you work as a contractor or run your own business, you must do what you agree to do unless there is a reason to cancel a contract by law. If you accept payments from customers, you should provide the goods and services you stated that you would deliver. If you cannot, then it is in your best interests to give each person you took money from a refund in full. Failing to do this could result in you facing charges like the man above is, which could hurt your ability to run a business in the future. This could ruin your career if you don't protect yourself.
