An out-of-state DUI can affect your Ohio license

When you are driving outside of Ohio, do not think that a traffic violation or drunk driving conviction will remain in that state. In addition to whatever consequences you face in that state, trouble will likely follow you back to Ohio. This also goes for out-of-state drivers arrested for OVI here in Ohio.

Through the Driver License Compact, an interstate agreement, states share information related to serious driving offenses committed by out-of-state drivers with those drivers' home states. That means for a DUI arrest in Indiana, the authorities there will notify the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

In Ohio, the penalty for a guilty plea or a conviction in another state for drunk driving will mean a six-month driver's license suspension and a reinstatement fee. Do you want to be stuck with unreliable public transportation to get to and from work for six months?

Ohio authorities will also notify your home state, where you could face an additional driver's license suspension or other harsh penalties. You will also be subject to much higher insurance rates when you are driving again.
