The complexities of the juvenile justice system

On Behalf of | Jan 28, 2016 | Criminal Defense

There is nothing simple about the juvenile justice system. Furthermore, it is different than the adult criminal justice system in a variety of ways.

Generally speaking, adult courts are worried about one thing: penalizing the guilty and making them pay the consequences for their actions.

Conversely, the juvenile justice system is focused more on rehabilitation. There are young people who make mistakes for one reason or another. In some cases, they don’t know better. This is why the juvenile system takes a rehab approach.

Some of the most common crimes committed by juveniles include: sex offenses, drug crimes, weapon offenses, gang offenses, assaults, vandalism, theft, burglary, driving under the influence, rape, and robbery.

When a juvenile commits a crime, it is important that he or she avoids adult court. This gives them a better chance of a lesser punishment and a better future.

When a youth is charged as an adult, they do not get special treatment. Instead, they are punished as an adult, which could include time in jail or prison.

Even though the juvenile justice system is more lenient, it is essential for the accused to have an experienced defense attorney on their side. This can be the difference between avoiding trouble and being tried as an adult.
