Understanding your right to due process

If you have been accused of a crime, it can be hard to tell exactly how far your rights extend and when they are being violated. That's because more people are not trained lawyers, and very few people without legal training encounter law enforcement on a consistent enough basis to truly understand what they should be able to expect and how to protect themselves. By going into any interaction with law enforcement with a clear understanding of a few basic concepts, though, you can navigate the situation more carefully. Understanding due process also means understanding how and when you can access legal advice, and when you should ask for it.

Ohio man charged with Internet crimes involving child pornography

Since 2012, The Ohio Bureau of Investigation Crimes Against Children has conducted investigations into illegal activity on the Internet involving children. The Bureau searches for files on the Internet believed to be child pornography, then traces the IP address of the computer accessing those files. Through a subpoena directed at the Internet provider, they track down the physical location of the computer allegedly accessing those files. A search warrant is then obtained and executed to obtain evidence that could lead to an arrest for suspected Internet crimes involving children.

Ohio driver faces drug charges for drugs carried by passengers

A driver from Steubenville was pulled over by the Ohio State Highway Patrol for a traffic violation recently. As a result of this traffic stop, the driver and his two passengers have been arrested on drug charges.

Felony charges filed after Ohio bar fight

Fights occurring outside of bars are an all too common occurrence. The combination of alcohol and an escalating conflict between two or more individuals has in many cases resulted in serious or even deadly consequences. However, when Ohio police arrest an individual on felony charges as a result of such an altercation, the question that commonly arises is what circumstances lead the fight to occur and who was actually responsible for initiating it.
