Cleveland Cavaliers’ Shumpert arrested for DUI, drug possession

Iman Shumpert, a guard with the Cleveland Cavaliers, is facing several charges relating to a traffic stop near Atlanta. Shumpert, who arrived in a trade with the New York Knicks in January, established himself as a solid defender, playing three positions and scoring an average of 5.8 rebounds a game.

According to police reports, the traffic stop by a corporal with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office happened around 11:30 p.m. The deputy reportedly observed that the Audi A3 Shumpert was driving had no working taillights. After following the vehicle for a short time, the deputy also reportedly observed the vehicle swerving and making a turn without maintaining its lane.

The deputy said he noticed an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and reported that the basketball player’s eyes were very red. The report said that Shumpert told the deputy that the car was rented and he wasn’t aware the brake lights didn’t work. He reportedly admitted to the deputy that he had smoked marijuana before leaving his “homegirl’s house.” He also told the deputy that there was no marijuana in the car.

Shumpert agreed to take a field sobriety test and the deputy said in his report, “Based on the physical manifestations present, I determined Mr. Shumpert was an impaired driver and less safe to operate a motor vehicle.” The vehicle was searched, and in a backpack in the trunk, a mason jar was allegedly found with what was believed to be marijuana in it.

Shumpert refused to take a blood test after he was arrested because he didn’t want people to recognize him and cause a scene. He was charged with driving under the influence, possession of marijuana less than one ounce and failure to maintain a lane.

The Cavaliers released a statement saying they are going to monitor the situation and no other comments will be made.

A drug charge can have a serious effect on your personal and professional life; however, you can present a strong defense against such a charge. An experienced criminal defense attorney can provide more information.
