Fights are not uncommon in correctional facilities here in Ohio or anywhere else in the country. However, the majority of the time, they are handled internally. Recently, outside assistance was called with regard to a fight inside a juvenile correctional facility. As a result, three officers are facing felony charges of assault.
According to reports, the 911 caller indicated that an officer was down after being beaten on by one of the juvenile inmates. The officer was said to have sustained a head injury that was bleeding. Somehow, when all was said and done, one of the three officers lost his job, and all three were standing before a judge in criminal court.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol is said to have come in shortly after the incident to investigate. At first, it was believed that there were up to five correctional officers involved in the alleged altercation. The then 15 year old inmate was said to have been attacked by at least one officer. The Department of Youth Services says that it will also be conducting an investigation once the criminal charges are resolved.
All three men have pleaded not guilty to the felony charges stemming from the alleged beating of the juvenile inmate. There is a certain amount of control that correctional officers may have to use at times in order to restrain an inmate, juvenile or adult. It will be up to the state to show that these men went above and beyond that threshold in their dealings with this particular juvenile.
