Woman working for an Ohio Sheriff charged with embezzlement

On Behalf of | Jul 10, 2013 | Embezzlement

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Department has arrested one of its civilian employees that works in the front office. The Ohio woman has been charged with embezzlement related to some missing funds. The missing money is comprised of service fees paid by Fayette County citizens for various things.

The sheriff’s office provides many services that require a fee. Some of those services include, but are not limited to, report copies, permits for concealed weapons, civil process service and home confinement. According to authorities, the woman had allegedly been keeping the monies for herself and had been maintaining a separate receipt book and submitting false reports to conceal the theft. There is approximately $30,000 missing over the course of the past several months.

The Ohio woman is a secretary in the department’s front office. She has been with the department for about two years. What led authorities to suspect the woman has not been revealed. Details regarding how long the money has been missing and who else may have had access to the money have not been revealed.

The charge of embezzlement carries serious penalties and consequences. It would be beneficial for the secretary in this case to conduct her own investigation into who else may have had access to the money, receipt books and reports that she is accused of stealing and altering. She will also need to review the evidence against her and confront any witnesses to her alleged crimes. It will be up to prosecutors to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that this secretary was able to outwit members of the sheriff’s department for several months and commit these crimes.
